In 2003, Keith Urban released his version of “Raining on a Sunday.” The song reached #3 on the charts that year.
Written by country singer Radney Foster (“Nobody Wins” and “Just Call Me Lonesome”) and songwriter Darrell Brown (Josh Turner’s “Why Don’t We Just Dance”), the song appeared on Foster’s third studio album with background vocals from Darius Rucker.
The inspiration for Foster and Brown is pretty literal. As they were writing they got to talking about how much they enjoy spending their quiet Sundays with their family. Naturally the talk became more romantic and about love and that those Sundays are even better if it’s raining.
Keith Urban was a fan of Foster’s album and the song in particular. While Foster was skeptical about how sincere Urban was about wanting to record the song — Urban insisted it was important to him and became a top hit for him a few years later.
Make sure you check out Foster’s version and listen for Darius Rucker’s background vocals.
