2018 CMA Awards Preview: Song of the Year

As a reminder, the eligibility for the 2018 CMAs are from July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018.

According to the CMA Awards, the criteria for Song of the Year is as follows:

Any country song with original lyrics and music is eligible based on the song’s country singles chart activity. The award is presented to the songwriter.

2018 Nominees:

“BODY LIKE A BACKROAD” – Sam Hunt (Hunt, Zach Crowell, Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne)

“BROKEN HALOS” – Chris Stapleton (Stapleton and Mike Henderson)

“DROWNS THE WHISKEY” – Jason Aldean ft. Miranda Lambert (Josh Thompson, Brandon Kinney and Jeff Middleton)

“DRUNK GIRL” – Chris Janson ( Janson, Tom Douglas and Scooter Carusoe)

“TEQUILA” – Dan + Shay (Nicolle Galyon and Jordan Reynolds)

Summary: The time frame of all of these songs is perhaps the most staggering. “Body Like a Backroad” was released in February of 2017, and went on to spend 34 weeks at the top of the charts. “Broken Halos” was released a few months later in April, but didn’t really take off until the following winter, soon after winning the Grammy for ‘Best Country Song’ in January 2018. “Drowns the Whiskey” was released in May of this year, reaching number one in August. Chris Janson’s “Drunk Girl” took the country world by surprise, and also garnered him a lot of attention outside of Nashville. Written from the perspective of a father, all three songwriters could closely relate. “Tequila” by Dan+Shay is their most successful song to date. Released in January of this year, the song hit the top of the charts in early July. A song of heartbreak and regret, it is matched with powerful vocals.

Our Pick: “Tequila” Dan+Shay

The Winner Will Be: “Broken Halos” Chris Stapleton
