Throwback Jam: My Maria

“My Maria” is arguably Brooks and Dunn’s biggest hit ever. But did you know it’s not even theirs originally? It’s actually a cover of another artist.

In 1973, country-pop singer BW Stevenson released it as a pop song. It climbed all the way to #9 on the pop charts. Fast forward 23 years to 1996 and Brooks and Dunn would end up making the song belong to them.

After releasing “My Maria” as their new single it spent three weeks at #1 on country charts before being knocked off by George Strait’s “Blue Clear Sky.” The duo won a Grammy for Best Country Performance by a Group or Duo, and Billboard named it the best country song of 1996.
