Devin Dawson. Remember the name because this guy is not going anywhere.
His first single “All On Me” reached #2 on the country airwave chart, and his debut album “Dark Horse” quickly found it’s way to #5 on the Billboard Country charts, and currently he finds himself on tour, opening for country royalty – Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.
And you know who we thank for the gift that is Devin Dawson music? Taylor Swift. Now I’m sure there are millions of videos of fans singing covers of their favorite Taylor Swift song, so you know it’s a big deal when Taylor retweets your video saying “OBSESSED.”
Back in 2014 Dawson and fellow Nashville artist Louisa Wendorff did a mashup of Swift’s “Style” and “Blank Space.” I am the most critical person of Taylor Swift’s music, but this arrangement is so different and haunting, it’s no wonder it caught Swift’s attention. Seriously check this out.
That was only the beginning.
Dawson, who considers himself a songwriter first, has written a 12 song masterpiece of an album. Lyrically driven, each song tells a 3 minute story. “All On Me” and his latest single “Asking For A Friend” may be the most main stream, closest in the vein to the country music that you hear on the radio. But I think country fans are ready for different sounding tunes such as “Dark Horse” and “Symptoms.” (Don’t get me started on this song – it’s genius). This album is so complete and gives you a little of everything, from love songs, to heartbreak, to self reflection. Although it may not sound like country of the 70s and 80s, heck even from the last 10 years, it’s pure country from the lyrics to the musicality.
I’m not one to rank songs, because it is impossible, and also because I will probably change my mind an hour later, but here it goes. Also, I’m a big fan of listening to an album in order. There is a lot of thought and discussion that goes into an artist’s album, and I like the thought that I’m listening to their story they want it to be told.
